Customer Reviews
I bought a Black Air Shark KA-50 from a mall vendor and paid way too much compared to here, but life goes on. I found this to be a great light weight heli.
I was a little miffed that there was no instruction manual, but having a lot of experience with R/C airplanes, including gas engine types, I knew the basics. Opening the battery compartment on the Xmitter I inserted four AA batteries and found the Xmitter did not work. If I had instructions I would have seen to take out the battery tray and insert EIGHT of the AA's. Remember to plug the battery tray into the Xmitter.
Now with a working Xmitter I was ready to fly for the first time. What was the Xmitter red flashing light for? I set all trims at mid point of their travel and turned on the heli. When I went throttle up nothing happened. AH HA. The Xmitter and Receiver in the heli need to sync. Now where are the directions at? Oh yeah, there wasn't any. So I tried what some other R/C aircraft and cars need, and that was full throttle, hold for one second, then throttle down. VIOLA!
Out of the box, this has to be one of the most stable R/C helis I have ever flown. If you are a novice flyer, pick a large open area, and by large I mean your two car garage may be the minimum. After a couple hours of practice you can try a smaller room, just be careful of expensive or antique knick knacks, because most wives will not understand if you crash into those.
As with any R/C heli, look at the total rotor diameter tip to tip, and keep the heli that much lower than ceiling or away from walls of any room you fly it in. Closer than that and the air flow around the rotors will suck the heli to the ceiling or pull it into the wall. Notice also that when the heli is that same rotor diameter distance from the floor that it will float there on a cushion of its downdraft, it's called ground effect.
Now go back and buy one of these. The price here is about 40% less than I paid at the mall. He must have bought a truck load of these from the Amazon seller and set up a booth there.
NOTE TO ALL: Do NOT ever charge a hot LiPol battery pack. After flying the battery will be hot. Allow to cool to room temp before charging. Charging a hot LiPol battery can have a range of outcomes between burning the house down on one hand, to severely shortening the battery life on the other. Nothing good comes of trying to charge a hot LiPol. Go buy extra battery packs if you can't wait for it to cool.
THIS WILL BE MY 3RD POST ON THIS SITE ON THREE DIFFERENT HELICOPTERS. I JUST WANT TO THANK ALL THE REVIEWERS FOR THIER INPUT. I AM NEW TO THE HOBBY JUST 6 MONTHS AND I AM HAVING A GREAT TIME WITH IT AND WHAT I BOUGHT. THANKS TO YOUR INPUT. I just purchased a AIR SHARK KA-50 and WOW it is powerful and fun to fly. In my opinion if it was not for practicing with the S107 and S032 which I own both I would not be as good and operator for the KA-50. It requires more trimming and controlling of the power for this model. But I adjusted very quickly on the first flight because I KNEW WHAT TO DO. A beginner would not. I took my time got the feel for the controls and BAM I was in KID MODE FOR 15 minutes.
I am now home on leave and my grandson is loving the S107. YES I had it for over 2 months flying it and now he is flying it. No problems. Then he tried the S032. Yes I had it for 2 months also. I followed the pointers on cool off between flight times, flied them daily for 2 months and they still work fine. Yes the flight time lacks by a few minutes but that is it. A brand new set of blades can help with that. DURABILITY IS GREAT BUT THE OPERATOR RISK TAKING IS THE FACTOR ON ALL THE MODELS I MENTIONED. NOW CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR THE BEST LARGE SIZE ELECTRIC OUTDOOR HELICOPTER.
The KA-50 is the BEST BUY BUT NOT A BEGINNER HELI, and also I recommend the SYMA S023 APACHE. IT IS THE SAME AS THE KA-50, SHORTER BUT I BELIEVE THEY IMPROVED THE GYRO. If you are patience with learning the trimming aspects of these 2 helicopters then yes I recommend as a beginner buy. But you are more prone to break them. I HATE BRAKING THINGS SO I TAKE MY TIME, AND I SAVE A LOT OF MONEY. Plus waiting for parts to get where I am in IRAQ SUCKS, so I hope my review helps.
Additional INFO: Buy spare battery for KA-50, S032 and S023 to include blades. You will not regret it. Damage to blades effects flight performance. Our Helicopter Clubs meets every Monday and the most popular one is the KA-50, and different Apache series models. Some better then others. WE RECOMMEND THE SYMA SO23 APACHE AND KA-50 among the best mid size helicopters, S032 the second best but not as powerful. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME SFC FERNANDEZ BASRA IRAQ
